America Night

America Night at Queen’s School of English

Have you ever wondered what the United States is really like outside of what it looks like in movies? Everyone knows that the United States is one of the largest countries in the world. But just how large is it? Just how diverse is the American landscape? And why do Americans have weird customs like pie eating contests and putting ketchup on eggs? Fortunately, Queen’s School of English has the answers to all those questions and more during the school’s America Night!

America Night is a special event unique to Queen’s School of English held on the first Wednesday of every month. Hosted by a teacher from the U.S state of Oregon, America Night is a unique opportunity to learn about the U.S from a true blood American. America Night is dynamic and student focused, not to mention free refreshments.Students will have the chance to get to know each other through interactive activities like labeling maps, finding missing American song lyrics and reading articles about interesting places in the United States and talking to each other about them.

Every month there is a different topic. Past examples include: national parks, travel, and transportation. America Night also offers a chance to learn about topics that aren’t generally discussed. For example, we talk about how and why Americans think the U.S is “the shining city on the hill” and how that isn’t exactly the case. Don’t worry that you may feel confused or lost? Do not be afraid to ask questions. Instead of a Q&A at the end, students may ask questions at any time during the event. Whether it’s during a group discussion or pair/group activities.

To top everything off, there is a fun trivia contest at the end of each America Night with questions related to the topic. Students are usually divided into groups and are allowed to choose their group names. The harder the question category, the greater the gain, but also the greater the risk. So your team should choose wisely. Finally, in true American fashion, the entire group gets to vote on the topic for the next America Night. The students are given three or four choices to vote on. In the event of a tie. The top two topics get voted on in a run off vote.

So if you want to learn about the United States in a unique and dynamic manner that only Queen’s School of English offers, come to our next America Night. We welcome anyone who wants to learn about America. It’s free. There are free American themed snacks.
